As the UK’s car industry appears to be in freefall as a result of Brexit, we take a look at where there may be at least some areas of growth that do not rely on our relationship with our European neighbours.
The announcement of closures or reduced production is now almost a daily occurrence from the car industry in the UK with signs all pointing to the pending destruction of what was previously one of this country’s major areas of employment with Bentley, Honda & Nissan all announcing potential job losses as a result of closure or moving production elsewhere.
None of this bodes well for the UK’s reputation as an engineering giant, but more so for our economy.
The country’s move into the space business may be one of our saving graces if it grows to become a fully fledged manufacturing and launch industry, but even here the company that appear to be making the most progress on British soil, are Danish company, Orbex, who are farming out the manufacturing of their 3D printed engines to a german firm following a series of funding wins from both public and private sector sources. Hopefully, we will see other emerging industries popping up to replace the losses resulting from departing car manufacturers.
Update: Jaguar Land Rover have now joined the exodus by announcing they will cut 5,000 jobs near Solihull (8.4.2019)
