With the UK poised to head to the voting booths tomorrow in the 2019 General Election, we take a look at recent polling data and main stories appearing in the media.
This is likely one of the most important elections in British history as Brexit, Scottish Independence and a potential hard border with Northern Ireland are all issues that are still to be settled and the outcome of the General Election will determine exactly which way each of those issues come to a conclusion.
The Northern Ireland border issue has to date seen no real solution presented and both Northern Ireland and its Southern neighbour have expressed their desire to avoid any hard borders between the countries. Although how this will be possible is anyone’s guess as the EU will not want borderless access into its region.
The matter of Brexit has been the focus of the Conservative Party’s general election campaign with the slogan “Get Brexit Done” being banded about at every opportunity. The Lib Dems have also focussed heavily on Brexit and claim to be the only party who can halt the process. The SNP up in Scotland have also been campaigning to “Stop Brexit” as the country voted by a large margin to remain in the EU.
Labour appear to have mostly sat on the fence on the Brexit issue, with Jeremy Corbyn stating during public debates that he has vowed to remain “Neutral” on the Brexit issue.
A lot of criticism has been aimed at Boris Johnson for avoiding tv interviews as well as coming under increased scrutiny for his apparent dishonesty. And yet, despite the negative attention the tories have been getting, they do still appear to be riding high in the polls (albeit with a much small lead than last month).
The most recent YouGov polling has shown the following potential outcome of 2019 General Election:
– Conservatives 339 (-20)
– Labour 231 (+20)
– SNP 41 (-2)
– Lib Dems 15 (+2)
– Green Party 1
